BIBLIOTECAS - 2 - Library Design Ideas

The cozy upstairs library in a Lattingtown, New York, house, was formerly a bedroom, "and we wanted to give a sense of purpose," designer Meg Braff says. The sofa fabric is Laura Ashley's Springfield 22, through Kravet.

Designer David Kaihoi built this floor-to-ceiling bookcase himself and painted it high-gloss Black by Fine Paints of Europe. The floor, painted to mimic a rug, is Hale Navy and White Down, both by Benjamin Moore. "Big furniture makes a small room seem grander," says Kaihoi.

Designer Myra Hoefer's California home's unique library and office features a large table perfect hosting dinner parties.

"Red libraries are best!" says designer Alessandra Branca. Walls are upholstered in wool paisley. The sofa and ottoman are Branca designs.

Designed by Gene Meyer and Frank de Biasi, this library features seahorses throughout the room, including the vintage plaster lamps with rattan shades. The pink on the walls, decorated with seashells, is a custom mix that is fitting for this Miami home.

"The attitude of the library is modern, but it's cozy and warm — almost womblike," architect David Mann says of this space in a New York City apartment. Walls are painted Ralph Lauren Orion Grey. Mix Table lamp from Luceplan.

Crowning the library hearth in Amanda Lindroth's Bahamas house are 19th-century watercolors of the Bahamas by Gaspard Le Marchant Tupper. Willow Group rattan chairs are pulled up to a backgammon table.

In the library of designer Annie Brahler's Illinois house, antique fauteuils stand against a bookcase made from a salvaged door surround.
