BIBLIOTECAS - 1 - Library Design Ideas


Designer Amanda Kyser has filled Long Island home's library with artistic details. The Molina sofa from Bespoke is covered in Arabica Belgian linen from Libeco-Lagae, and the pillows are a mix of antique silk ikat and 19th-century Thai patterns. Walls are painted Dark Taupe and bookcases are Merlot, both by Benjamin Moore.

The library in designer Garrow Kedigian's Manhattan apartment sheds fresh light on the classics he collects, both literary and decorative. "I wanted to have a library before that notion becomes extinct," says Kedigian, "but the shell had to feel contemporary and fun." Solution? A vibrant custom palette in a Fine Paints of Europe Brilliant finish. Curtains of Clarence House Elettra flank a sofa in Scalamandré's Variegation herringbone. A Louis XV fauteuil (a gift from Kedigian's grandmother) retains its original blue velvet, and a neoclassical side chair is updated with Glant Liquid Leather.

In his 16th-century French countryside estate, William Christie transformed a bare room into a library, outfitted with Cuban mahogany shelves salvaged from a library in Nantes. His carpenter found more Cuban mahogany to build the barrel-vault ceiling. The classical busts crowning the shelves are copies made by Lorenzani in Paris. By painting the paneled walls and cabinets of the library in a Charlotte, North Carolina house, a deep blue, designer Lindsey Coral Harper gave a sliver of a room impact.

Designed by Albert Hadley, this New York City apartment office features a custom bench with corner arms, which is upholstered in Tiger silk velvet in Oro by Lee Jofa. The desk chair is covered in Liberty's Papageno from Osborne & Little. The Stark rug is made of vintage carpet fragments. Italian marbleized paper lines the bookcase.

A Peter Rogers portrait of Alex Hitz's close friend, the late Nan Kempner, hangs in the library of his Los Angeles house. "The room doesn't get a lot of light, so I decided to make it cozy and turned it into an English-style portrait room, which is ridiculous, but fun."

Bookcases cleverly mask awkward angles in the library of a Manhattan apartment designed by Alexander Doherty. Early-20th-century French lamps overhang the vintage Eames chair in its original leather.  In this historic 18th-century home, designer Jeffrey Bilhuber revived the rooms with bright colors, including the green floor of the library.
